5 Golden Rules to Prevent Auto Theft & Vandalism and Save Big in the Process

Follow these guidelines to avoid becoming a victim of auto theft

Vandalism and auto theft can have a massively negative impact on your auto insurance policy rates, so much so that there are areas in the U.S. where, because of the high risk of vandalism and auto theft, people are unable to purchase even the most basic auto insurance policy. Adding insult to injury is the fact that not only has the individual experienced the theft or vandalism of their vehicle, but they also wind up footing the bill with an increased insurance rate! To help you avoid becoming a part of the statistic in which a vehicle is stolen every 27 seconds, here are some practices you can put into play that should work to minimize your risk of auto theft:

Note: Some of these methods/practices you can use to discourage auto theft can also have the added bonus of reducing your monthly auto insurance premiums!

Golden Rule #1 -  Install Auto Theft Prevention Devices to Save Big

  • Installing an anti-theft device, such as a steering column lock, in your car.
  • Installing a car alarm in your vehicle.

Golden Rule #2 – Make Sure to Avoid Purchasing a Vehicle That Has a High Risk of Being Stolen

(Ask your insurance provider if they have a list of high risk vehicles that you might use when purchasing your next vehicle).

Golden Rule #3 – Keep Your Possessions Out of Sight!

  •  If you are leaving your purse in the car, tuck it under the seat, or lock it in your trunk.
  • Stash your valuables out of sight (envelopes holding sensitive information, checks, credit cards and money in your glove box.)!
  • Stow your GPS system and cell phone under your seat or lock these items in the glove box.

Golden Rule #4 -  Lock Your Vehicle Doors!

  • Upon entering your vehicle, lock the doors behind you. Upon exiting the vehicle, lock the doors behind you.
  • Always remove the keys from the ignition when leaving your vehicle (yes, even if you will only be absent for a few moments.).

Golden Rule #5 -  Safety First!

  • Park your vehicle in well-lit areas (this is something you should be doing regardless).
  • Consider having your car windows tinted to make it more difficult for thieves to see inside your vehicle(make sure this is legal where you live first).

It’s important that you shop around for the best rates on auto insurance and many agencies will work with you to achieve the goal of a highly competitive auto insurance rate.
